The GIft You Give Could Save a LifeI was recently listening to a local radio program and they mentioned something about a Bay Area fire fighters 2 year old son needing a bone marrow donor. I did a little checking and learned how poor the odds are of these patients that need donors are, particularly if they are minorities. According to DKMS less than 30% of patients who need a transplant can find a match through a relative. The odds of matching an unrelated donor are between 1 in 100 and 1 in a million. Currently only 25% of the National Registry represent racial minorities. This means that the odds of a minority patient finding a match right now are closer to 1 in a million. There are many ways we can help, a good starting point would be giving a few moments of our time to read a little more about the process at the National Marrow Donor Program Website.
